50th anniversary (1972 - 2022)
Waterloo Regional REACT is celebrating 50 years of community service!
How did it all begin?
In 1972, a group of four individuals in our community started monitoring CB Emergency Channel 9. Their purpose? To assist local Police and Fire Departments by providing communications and emergency stand-by support for those in our region.
What have we been doing for 50 the last years?
A lot.
Our support to regional Police, Fire, and EMS partners has evolved from monitoring a CB radio channel to providing emergency Transportation and Scene Lighting support, Incident Canteen Service (ICS), and RIDE program assistance. We helped out the 1974 Grand River Flood. The 1980 plane crash on Glenwood Avenue. The 1998 Parkhill Dam drowning. And the 2010 University Ave Plaza fire.
Our equipment inventory has progressed to include everything from our Integrated Radio System equipment to Scene Lighting Units (SLUs) to an amphibious Argo to a mobile Command Centre. Yes, we even had a boat at one time. Available 24/7, 365 days a year to support the community in times of need.
You’ll find our team of First Aid and First Responder-certified volunteers at many of the area’s athletic, cultural, and community events. You’ve seen us everywhere from Elmira Maple Syrup Festival to the KW Airshow to Oktoberfest and Santa Claus Parades.
Today…
The technology has advanced. Our role in the community has evolved. We have grown from four to over thirty members – both men and women, and all volunteers. But we have not changed in our commitment and belief in the contributions and impacts that a skilled and disciplined team of volunteers can make in our community
